- PublicationOpen AccessSustainability of Tourism Development in the city of Ain-Sukhna, Egypt(Alanya Üniversitesi, 2022-01-01) Mahgoub, YasserTourism is a major economic source for Egypt, due to its significant natural and cultural attractions. Yet, rapid development and construction of touristic facilities have a negative impact on the fragile natural and cultural heritage. This paper studies the recent touristic developments of the coastal stretch of Ain-Sukhna on the Red Sea coastal region of Galala Mountain, and their impact on the surrounding natural and cultural attractions. Coral reefs and rich marine life have made this stretch among the prime fishing and scuba diving destinations in the world. The area is also famous for its year-round sunny beaches and the spectacular coastal scenic drive where Galala Mountain reaches the Red Sea. Recently, development has started on the mountains following the construction of Galala Mountain Road. Galala City started with Galala University and several residential, touristic, and commercial facilities. This paper studies the pattern of development in the area during the past 40 years and assesses its impact on natural and cultural resources.
- PublicationOpen AccessAssessing the Efficacy of Spatial Planning and Architecture in New Cities: A Case Study of Galala City and Its Implications for Responsible Urban Development(IOP Publishing Ltd, 2023) Mahgoub, YasserThis study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies used in the planning and construction of new responsible cities and to determine whether or not the stated objectives are being met. As a case study, Galala City provided insights into the efficacy of implementing the principles of responsible cities and served as a reference for similar projects. The evaluation encompassed an examination of diverse elements, including social, economic, and environmental considerations, in order to ascertain the degree to which the theory has been effectively implemented and its influence on both the city and its inhabitants. The research findings indicated that a critical first move in the development of new cities should involve the establishment of robust governance structures and institutions. It is essential to provide a variety of housing choices to accommodate different economic groups, promoting inclusiveness. Additionally, addressing the housing, commercial, and recreational requirements of low-skilled workers throughout the construction and post-construction phases is vital. Emphasizing the creation of employment opportunities and business prospects emerges as a fundamental principle for drawing and retaining permanent residents. Examining how well the Responsible Cities theory works in practice, using Galala City as a case study, has the potential to enhance the field of urban planning and architecture. This, in turn, can promote the creation of cities worldwide that are not only more sustainable but also more inclusive.
- PublicationOpen AccessModel Willingness to Use Public Transport in the USA Based on Socio-Economic and Demographic Characteristics(Horizon Research Publishing, 2023-03-12) Elkafoury, Ahmed; Saeed, Khaled; Darwish, Ahmed Mahmoud; Zagow, MagedPromoting public transport can increase the role of transport in sustainable development. Thus, studying the determinants of choosing public transport by travelers is crucial for transportation planning purposes, where developing an accurate model can help in examining any proposed scenarios. This paper aims to develop a multivariable regression model to describe the willingness to use public transport (W) represented as the percentage of people who use public transport in United States cities. First, census data of socio-economic and demographic characteristics are analyzed to identify significant factors for W to develop the model. Then, the regression technique is utilized to develop the model. The model is statistically assessed, in which the significance of all independent variables is examined and represented by a p-value. Moreover, the correlation between variables is examined. Then, the most statistically appropriate model for W is identified based on a set of performance measures such as coefficient of determination, average error, geometrical mean, Theil's inequality coefficient, and frictional bias. Finally, sensitivity analysis is conducted to assess the elasticity of the model to changes in the significant variables by considering a 10% change (increase or decrease) in the average of each variable.
- PublicationOpen AccessImpact of Climate and Environment Changes on the Sustainability of the Coastal Areas The Case of Ain Sukhna, Red Sea, Egypt(Luxor University, Faculty of Archaeology, 2023-06) Mahgoob, YasserThis paper investigates the impact of climate and environmental changes on the sustainability of the coastal area of Ain Sukhna, Red Sea, Egypt. Ain Sukhna sea shores and Galala mountain region have witnessed rapid change and modifications during the past 50 years. Climate changes are expected to impact this area through the increase in the amount and intensity of rainfall and the rise of seawater tides. Modifications applied to the topography of the mountains through grading and levelling are spreading excavation debris on the sides of the mountains creating a new hazard if swept away by the rainwater. The paper analyzes the design and construction of the coastal and mountain developments and assesses their capacity to withstand these changes. The negative impact of these changes is not only ecological but also physical and socioeconomic. Climate change impacts are becoming more instantaneous and intensified. Place-based strategies for reducing the negative impact of climate change are required to reduce the physical and ecological vulnerabilities and manage the impacts of climate change.
