The Medical Laboratory Technologist is an integral part of the healthcare team. Through laboratory analysis of human samples,the medical laboratory technologist provide vital information about the status and function of the body and its systems to be utilized in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

This unique program at GU qualifies graduates to work in medical and research laboratories and bridge the gap between the laboratory physician and technician, providing the required basic and laboratory sciences and acquiring practical skills in various subspecialties of the medical laboratory. It ensures mastering the use of laboratory equipment based on the full understanding of the fundamental engineering knowledge and training on operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

A medical lab technologist analyzes body fluids and tissues for proper diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. They might also ensure blood types match before transfusions or test urine samples for drugs.

What does a medical lab technologist do?

  1. Draw blood samples from patients.
  2. Perform the requested testing procedures using a range of testing techniques. Examples: using an automated analyzer to perform chemical measurements; identifying cells and bacteria visually using a microscope.
  3. Prepare a wide variety of sample types for analysis, such as blood, body fluids, tissue samples, and culture swabs.
  4. Validate the testing results based on a quality assurance system.
